The community of Morris is reeling after a tragic incident on Interstate 80 Monday morning that claimed the life of a local high school student, identified as 17-year-old Dakota Welch. Authorities say the incident is being investigated as an apparent suicide.
According to Grundy County Coroner John Callahan, a pedestrian was struck by a semi-trailer truck on I-80 westbound near milepost 112, just past the Lisbon Road overpass, shortly after 8:15 a.m. Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 3 and emergency crews responded to the scene following reports of a body in the roadway.
Investigators say the teen jumped from the overpass, landing on a passing semi-truck before being struck and fatally injured. Despite immediate response from first responders, Welch was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities closed the westbound lanes of I-80 for several hours as ISP and the Grundy County Coroner’s Office conducted an investigation. The highway reopened around 12:40 p.m.
Officials have not released further details as the investigation continues, but no foul play is suspected.
The heartbreaking loss has left the Morris community in mourning, with classmates, teachers, and neighbors expressing shock and sorrow. Local school officials have confirmed that counseling services are being made available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Mental health professionals are urging families to check in on young people and remind them that help is available for those struggling with emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm.
The Grundy County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
